Daniil Medvedev Defeats Adrian Mannarino to Reach Vienna Open Semifinals
The straight-sets victory also officially secures the Russian tennis star a spot in the upcoming ATP Tour Finals in November.
Daniil Medvedev advanced to the semifinals of the Vienna Open on Friday by securing a comfortable straight-sets victory over French tennis player Adrian Mannarino. The dominant performance in the quarterfinals ended with a score of 6-2, 6-3, allowing the Russian player to sail through the match without facing a single break point.
From the beginning of the contest, Medvedev controlled the pace of the game. He immediately broke Mannarino's first serving game of the opening set and secured a second break later to close it out at 5-2, eventually taking the set 6-2. He maintained his momentum in the second set, converting breaks at 3-3 and 5-3 to effortlessly close out the match.
Beyond advancing in the ATP 500 tournament in Austria, this victory carried significant implications for the remainder of the season. The win officially qualified Medvedev for the prestigious ATP Tour Finals, which are scheduled to take place in Turin this November. This marks his seventh career appearance at the prestigious year-end tournament.
Reflecting on his past success at the event, Medvedev previously lifted the trophy in 2020 during the tournament's final edition at the O2 Arena in London before it relocated to Italy. He also finished as the runner-up in 2021, where he was defeated by Alexander Zverev, and reached the semifinals in 2023.
Medvedev enters the final stages of the Vienna tournament riding a strong wave of momentum, boasting a seven-match winning streak. His recent form includes 17 victories across his last 19 matches alongside two titles won in his previous four tournaments at Hangzhou and Almaty.
Looking ahead to the next round, Medvedev prepares for a challenging semifinal matchup against Carlos Alcaraz. The Spanish player advanced to the semifinals on Saturday after defeating American competitor Tommy Paul in straight sets.
Meanwhile, the Vienna Open also saw world number one Alexander Zverev secure his own spot in the semifinals following a decisive 6-0, 6-2 victory over Arthur Fery. As the tournament reaches its climax, attention continues to focus on the remaining competitors vying for the title and the final qualification spots for Turin.
