Cruise Ship Collides with Cargo Vessels in Bremerhaven, Canceling Voyage

A severe gust of wind pushed the Mein Schiff 3 into two docked container ships during its departure, resulting in significant damage and a canceled trip.

A major cruise vacation came to an abrupt halt on Sunday evening when the cruise ship Mein Schiff 3 collided with two container ships while departing from the port of Bremerhaven, Germany. The vessel, carrying 2,428 guests and 922 crew members, was attempting to start a 20-night journey toward the Canary Islands when stormy weather and strong winds interfered with the maneuver.

According to reports from the Bremen police, the ship was assisted by tugboats when a powerful gust caught the vessel around 5:30 PM. Despite the efforts of the tugboats, the cruise ship drifted off course and struck two container ships that were moored at the riverbank. Footage captured by a passenger showed the narrowing distance between the vessels just before impact, with a traveler heard stating, "I think that's it for the trip."

Authorities confirmed that all three vessels involved sustained considerable damage. The large container ship suffered a severely torn port side spanning multiple meters, along with deformed container mountings. The smaller container ship sustained minor damage, while the Mein Schiff 3 suffered impacts to its exterior walls and lifeboats, including their cranes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and no water entered any of the damaged ships.

Following the collision, the cruise ship safely returned to the passenger terminal. The water police initiated an investigation into the exact cause of the accident, and an official departure ban was issued for the cruise ship and both cargo vessels involved in the incident. Passengers initially remained on board while experts evaluated the situation.

By Monday morning, Tui Cruises announced the official cancellation of the Canary Islands voyage. A company representative explained that the identified damages required immediate and short-term repairs at a shipyard, calling the cancellation the only responsible decision under the circumstances. The cruise line arranged for guests to return home and offered assistance with their departures.

Legal experts have weighed in on the rights of the affected travelers. Under standard travel regulations, passengers whose cruises are canceled at the very outset are entitled to a full refund of their travel price. Legal professionals noted that tour operators must process refunds promptly, typically within 14 days, when trips are called off due to unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances.

In addition to ticket refunds, legal analysts suggest that passengers may have potential claims for compensation regarding wasted vacation time, depending on how liability is ultimately assigned. While strong winds are generally considered extraordinary circumstances, lawyers pointed out that the incident occurred within the harbor rather than during open-sea storms, raising questions regarding harbor maneuvering responsibilities.

Tui Cruises has not yet announced whether subsequent holiday sailings planned for later in the year aboard the Mein Schiff 3 will also be affected by the necessary shipyard repairs. Meanwhile, passengers from Sunday's aborted departure are preparing to head home as the port authorities continue their inquiry into the collision.
