Copa del Rey: Sevilla and Athletic Advance as Oviedo Exits
Spanish soccer clubs navigated the opening round of the Copa del Rey amidst nationwide moments of silence following a tragic train accident in Toledo.
The opening round of the Copa del Rey took place under a somber atmosphere across Spain, as matches were preceded by moments of silence and teams wore black armbands to honor the victims of a tragic railway accident in Urda, Toledo, which resulted in at least 69 deaths.
In competitive action, top-tier sides largely asserted their dominance. The Sevilla secured a 0-3 victory against Sporting Hortaleza in Alcalá de Henares. Robbie Ure opened the scoring with a header in the 25th minute, followed by a penalty converted by Peque just before halftime. Rubén Vargas sealed the win with a third goal shortly after the interval.
Athletic Club also advanced comfortably, defeating AE Prat 1-6 with goals from Maroan Sannadi, Robert Navarro, and Nico Serrano in the first half, followed by tallies from Txus Vizcay, Christian Imga, and Selton Sánchez in the second period.
Osasuna delivered one of the most commanding performances of the round, cruising to a 0-6 aggregate win over Atlético Calatayud, highlighted by a hat trick from Rubén García and a late goal by 18-year-old Asier Bonel.
Meanwhile, the Getafe experienced a severe scare against the Lebrijana. Falling behind 2-0 early in the match, Getafe rallied to equalize before halftime through goals from Abqar and Borja Mayoral, ultimately securing a narrow 2-3 victory thanks to Oral Mangala and a crucial late save by goalkeeper Jiri Letacjek.
The primary upset involving a professional team saw Real Oviedo eliminated after a thrilling match against Numancia. Oviedo fought back from a 2-0 deficit and later leveled a 3-2 scoreline, but ultimately fell in a penalty shootout. Oviedo joined Espanyol and Córdoba as the only professional clubs knocked out in the early stages.
Other notable results included Deportivo de A Coruña defeating Auriense 0-3 with a brace from Asp Jensen and a goal from Luismi Cruz, and Racing de Santander overcoming Ribadesella 0-2 behind two goals from Asier Villalibre.
