CNN Introduces New Voter Poll and Sightline Tool for Midterm Election Coverage

As voters head to the polls for the 2026 midterm elections, CNN is introducing a revamped polling approach and a real-time data analysis tool to interpret election results. The network's live coverage of Election Night in America officially kicks off at 4 p.m. ET, co-hosted by anchors Anderson Cooper and Jake Tapper from Washington, D.C.

For decades, the network has relied on exit polls to explain voter decisions, but this year introduces the CNN Voter Poll. This updated survey combines traditional in-person exit polling techniques with a large-sample nationwide survey conducted prior to Election Day. The methodology aims to provide a comprehensive look at the electorate across the nation and in 45 states holding Senate or gubernatorial contests.

The Voter Poll is based on approximately 100,000 interviews conducted by SSRS in collaboration with major news organizations, including ABC, the Associated Press, CBS, Fox News, MS NOW, and NBC. Nearly 80,000 participants completed a pre-election survey between October 19 and November 3, while roughly 22,000 voters are expected to participate in in-person exit polls across 15 competitive states.

Researchers verified survey participants against registered voter files to assess demographic traits, political history, and likelihood of voting. The full national sample has a margin of error of plus or minus 0.6 percentage points, with higher margins for individual states and demographic subgroups. The earliest results from the Voter Poll are scheduled for release after 5 p.m. ET on Election Day.

In addition to updated polling methods, CNN is launching Sightline, a real-time election insights tool designed to help viewers understand incoming data from the CNN Decision Desk. The tool translates raw numbers into assessments on who is favored to win by evaluating factors such as outstanding uncounted votes, geographic distribution, and comparisons to past election cycles.

Sightline will be active for approximately 25 major Senate and governor races nationwide. The tool incorporates five primary indicators—outstanding vote, geography, comparison to past performance, size of the lead, and voting method—each activating at different thresholds of reported votes to provide continuous modeling throughout the evening.

Network officials note that Sightline forecasts are distinct from formal race winner projections. Instead, the indicators offer a transparent view of how experts at the Decision Desk interpret data in real time, shifting dynamically as more votes are tallied and analyzed.

Viewers seeking to follow the coverage without traditional cable subscriptions can access CNN livestreams through various digital platforms. Live TV streaming services such as DirecTV, Hulu + Live TV, and Sling TV offer packages carrying the network, with select providers offering limited-time free trials for viewers tuning in to election night specials.
