Charles Barkley Discusses WNBA Trivia, Weight Loss, and LeBron James
The Hall of Famer recently showcased unexpected basketball trivia knowledge, reflected on his health journey, and weighed in on a national anthem controversy.
Retired NBA star and television analyst Charles Barkley recently made headlines across multiple fronts, ranging from surprising sports trivia success to personal health milestones and opinions on league controversies. Known widely for his comedic struggles on television guessing games, Barkley recently turned heads by demonstrating strong knowledge of Women's National Basketball Association rosters during an appearance on Candace Parker's podcast.
During the podcast segment, Barkley managed four correct guesses out of six attempts when challenged to identify teams for various players. His performance drew immediate praise from Parker, who noted that his score easily surpassed his typical outings on Inside the NBA. Among his correct answers was DeWanna Bonner, whom Barkley proudly recognized due to their shared connection as alumni of Auburn University.
Barkley's success with WNBA trivia came just days after he struggled through a recurring segment on Inside the NBA, where he famously failed to correctly identify the current teams of several NBA players. Barkley defended his previous struggles by explaining that the NBA season had only recently begun, leaving him little time to adjust to various offseason roster changes. In contrast, the WNBA season had already concluded, giving him more consistent opportunities to follow the league.
Outside of basketball commentary, Barkley recently opened up about his physical health and a significant weight-loss journey aided by GLP-1 medications. Following a 16-season Hall of Fame career where he weighed around 250 pounds, Barkley underwent two hip replacements in 2016 and 2018. Being inactive for months during his recovery led him to gain nearly 100 pounds, bringing his weight to a peak of 355 pounds and prompting a stern warning from his doctor.
Determined to improve his health and longevity, Barkley turned to medical assistance. Over the past three years, he has incorporated GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro and Zepbound into his routine, successfully dropping over 50 pounds. Describing the treatment as a life-changer, Barkley noted that he was willing to try anything to regain his health after his mobility was severely limited by his hip surgeries.
In addition to sports trivia and personal health updates, Barkley recently offered his perspective on a controversial moment involving LeBron James. During an appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Barkley addressed footage of James practicing a golf swing during the national anthem prior to a game against the Philadelphia 76ers. While U.S. President Donald Trump heavily criticized James and demanded an apology, Barkley distanced himself from the president's remarks while still condemning the player's actions.
Barkley stated that he never pays attention to statements made by the president, but he nonetheless found the behavior during the anthem to be disrespectful. He emphasized that while he believes individuals have the right to protest, he personally chooses to stand for the national anthem out of respect for military members and American values. Barkley's commentary on the matter highlighted his long-standing view that while protest is acceptable, certain traditions require careful handling.
