Champions League Standings Take Shape After Matchday Four
Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid maintain their winning streaks at the summit as the European tournament reaches its halfway point.
The UEFA Champions League completed the fourth matchday of its league phase this Wednesday, with Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid securing their positions at the top of the standings. Both clubs maintained their perfect records, each accumulating 12 points after four games played in the continental competition.
Paris Saint-Germain claimed the top spot in the standings thanks to a superior goal difference, following a commanding 6-0 victory against Villarreal at La Cerámica stadium. Meanwhile, Real Madrid kept pace by defeating AEK Athens 3-2 away, securing the win through a stoppage-time goal scored by midfielder Fede Valverde.
Behind the leading duo, Arsenal holds third place with 10 points following a 2-1 victory over Slavia Prague. Italian side Como, managed by Cesc Fàbregas, emerged as one of the tournament's major surprises by climbing to fourth place with nine points, bolstered by a historic 9-1 win against Lens.
FC Barcelona currently sits in fifth position with nine points after securing a 3-0 home victory against Aston Villa, featuring goals from Lamine Yamal and a brace by Raphinha. The Catalan club remains inside the top-eight bracket, which guarantees direct qualification to the round of 16 without needing to participate in the playoff round.
Several other clubs also sit on nine points, including Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, Club Brugge, Sporting CP, Real Betis, and Borussia Dortmund. Among them, Real Betis suffered a setback after losing to Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park. Following the match, Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini expressed disappointment over the result, stating that a draw would have been a fairer outcome while emphasizing his team's strong performance on the road.
In other matches, Viking FK achieved a historic milestone by securing its first victory in the top European competition, defeating Azerbaijan's Sabah 4-1 at home with goals from Zlatko Tripic and a pair from Erik Botheim. Elsewhere among Spanish participants, Atlético de Madrid fell 2-0 to Bayern Munich at the Metropolitano Stadium.
At the conclusion of the league phase, the top eight teams will advance directly to the round of 16. Teams finishing from ninth to twenty-fourth will enter a playoff round, while those ranking from twenty-fifth to thirty-sixth will be eliminated from the tournament as the remaining fixtures unfold.
