Chagas Disease Outbreak Leaves One Dead and Multiple Active Cases in Brazil
Health authorities are monitoring dozens of individuals following an outbreak linked to the consumption of artisanal patauá wine in rural Pará.
A patient infected during a Chagas disease outbreak passed away in the intensive care unit of the Menino Jesus Regional Hospital in Oriximiná, located in the western part of Pará state, Brazil. The death was officially announced by the municipal administration of Óbidos.
Following the fatality, health authorities are actively monitoring six confirmed cases still under medical care. Two individuals remain hospitalized, while four others receive outpatient treatment with stable conditions and no active symptoms. Additionally, 24 people who directly consumed the artisanal beverage continue to undergo epidemiological tracking and preventive medical examinations.
The outbreak stems from the consumption of artisanal patauá wine produced for domestic use and shared among relatives and acquaintances across the Fuzil and Liberdade communities in rural Óbidos. Sanitary inspections uncovered severe structural shortcomings at the processing site, which lacked physical barriers or protective coverings against dust and vectors. As a result, authorities sealed the property and suspended all local fruit-processing activities.
Public health officials noted that this event marks the first severe outbreak of the illness in Óbidos in over two decades. The State Secretariat of Public Health, working through the regional health center in Santarém, has supplied clinical management guidelines and guaranteed the distribution of the primary therapeutic medication, Benznidazol.
Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, traditionally transmitted through the feces of triatomine bugs, often referred to as kissing bugs. In the Amazon region, oral transmission has become increasingly common when vectors or their feces are accidentally ground into traditional beverages, such as patauá, açaí, or bacaba, during preparation without proper hygiene and heat treatment.
Global health experts emphasize that while the disease is endemic to Latin America, international travel and migration have occasionally raised awareness in other regions, including the southern United States. Preventive measures include sealing household wall cracks, using protective netting in high-risk areas, and ensuring that raw fruits and homemade beverages undergo thorough cleaning and proper thermal processing before consumption.
