Borussia Dortmund Secures 2-1 Victory Over Real Betis in Champions League
Konstantinos Karetsas scored the decisive late goal to help Dortmund claim their third win in four matches.
Borussia Dortmund earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Real Betis in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening, moving closer to direct qualification for the round of 16. Playing in front of 81,365 spectators at a sold-out stadium, the German side overcame an early injury to secure three crucial points.
The match began with Dortmund controlling possession and creating early opportunities, though they failed to capitalize on their initial chances. Head coach Niko Kovač had adjusted his lineup to a three-man defensive line, but his plans were disrupted in the first half when striker Serhou Guirassy was forced to leave the pitch due to muscular issues.
Following a scoreless first half, Fabio Silva broke the deadlock for Dortmund in the 49th minute by scoring from close range. The forward celebrated his goal with a brief dance, giving the hosts a well-deserved advantage after dominating much of the second half.
Real Betis responded in the 67th minute when Aitor Ruibal equalized for the Spanish visitors, capitalizing on a quick transition. However, parity did not last long as substitute Konstantinos Karetsas restored Dortmund's lead just five minutes later with a precise left-footed shot.
Karetsas, who entered the match to replace the injured Guirassy, expressed his gratitude after the final whistle. "I am super grateful for this moment. This was a great team effort," Karetsas told DAZN, adding that he feels good and healthy following a medical collapse he experienced on the pitch two months prior.
Manager Niko Kovač praised his squad's resilience after the match. "I'm very pleased with my team. We dictated the game for long periods and kept it under control," Kovač stated, noting that getting a positive boost from the bench proved vital.
Defender Julian Ryerson also reflected on the performance, pointing out that the team could have avoided a tense finish. "We should have settled this match earlier today—I think everyone could see that," Ryerson said, while acknowledging that they successfully exploited the opponent's weaknesses.
With three victories out of four matches, Dortmund now sits comfortably with nine points near the top of the standings. The team will face tougher continental tests in the coming months, with upcoming fixtures against Arsenal, Inter Milan, and Aston Villa.
