Borussia Dortmund Faces Werder Bremen in High-Stakes DFB-Pokal Rematch

After letting a two-goal lead slip earlier this month, Dortmund looks to avoid another late collapse in the German Cup.

Borussia Dortmund hosts Werder Bremen on Tuesday in the second round of the German Cup at Westfalenstadion, setting the stage for a tense knockout rematch just 18 days after their dramatic league encounter. With a place in the round of 16 on the line, the fixture requires a decisive outcome, with extra time and penalty kicks awaiting if the sides remain tied after 90 minutes. Both clubs arrived at this stage after comfortable first-round victories, with Dortmund sweeping past HEBC 5-0 and Werder Bremen earning a 3-0 win against Lüneburger SK Hansa.

The immediate backdrop to Tuesday's cup tie is their explosive Bundesliga meeting on October 9 at the same venue. Dortmund appeared in full control of that contest after late goals from Daniel Svensson in the 80th minute and Nico Schlotterbeck in the 85th minute opened a 2-0 advantage. However, Bremen produced a stunning comeback, pulling a goal back through Ludovit Reis in the 88th minute before former Dortmund striker Niclas Füllkrug headed in a stoppage-time equalizer from a free kick to steal a 2-2 draw.

That late capitulation sent Dortmund into a temporary tailspin, leaving them winless across their next two fixtures. Head coach Niko Kovac's team managed to stabilize in recent days, however, stringing together back-to-back single-goal triumphs with a 2-1 Champions League victory over Sabah FK and a 1-0 domestic win against Eintracht Frankfurt. Maximilian Beier scored the winner against Frankfurt, while Serhou Guirassy struck twice in Baku, though Kovac cautioned that his squad needs sharper finishing after missing numerous chances across both matches.

Addressing reporters ahead of the rematch, Kovac emphasized the need for complete concentration from start to finish. "We controlled the game for 80 to 85 minutes and then let it slip away in the final eight minutes," Kovac said. "If we can sustain over 90 minutes what we managed for 85, we’ll hopefully win the game as well." The coach also acknowledged Bremen’s resilience, noting that despite offseason departures, their opponents have assembled a cohesive and competitive squad.

Dortmund enters the tie managing several roster adjustments amid a grueling schedule that marks their sixth competitive match in just 19 days. Algerian defender Ramy Bensebaini remains sidelined as he serves the final match of his cup ban following a red card in the Supercup against Bayern Munich. In his place, young defender Joane Gadou starts in a backline featuring Waldemar Anton, Schlotterbeck, and Julian Ryerson, with Gregor Kobel in goal. Konstantinos Karetsas is sidelined by a foot ligament injury, while Carney Chukwuemeka is fit to feature in midfield alongside Joey Veerman, Felix Nmecha, and Jobe Bellingham.

Werder Bremen arrives at Westfalenstadion carrying considerable momentum of their own. Under head coach Daniel Thioune, the River Islanders have avoided defeat in every competition since suffering a 4-1 loss to Freiburg on the opening day of the Bundesliga season, most recently securing a 3-2 road victory against Mainz. Their previous fightback in Dortmund reinforced their reputation as a difficult opponent capable of mounting late surges, even when facing significant deficits away from home.

Despite that attacking prowess, Thioune opted to make a major alteration to his starting lineup by placing leading scorer Füllkrug on the bench. Füllkrug has registered eight goals in seven league appearances and nine overall this season, but Thioune expressed concern about player workload and the danger of soft-tissue fatigue, turning instead to Cedric Itten to spearhead the frontline. With Dortmund facing an impending trip to Bayern Munich on Saturday, both managers enter the clash balancing fitness concerns against the uncompromising demands of knockout soccer.
