Argentine football remembered Diego Maradona with heartfelt tributes while officials announced the upcoming reinauguration of the La Plata stadium named in his honor.
Football clubs across Argentina recently commemorated what would have been the 66th birthday of legendary player Diego Maradona. Among them, Boca Juniors shared emotional tributes on social media, reflecting the enduring impact of the iconic athlete on fans and the sport as a whole.
Boca Juniors released an innovative short film featuring audio-style messages from supporters expressing their deep affection and lingering grief since Maradona passed away in 2020. The club also published a historic photograph from 1995 capturing Maradona returning to La Bombonera to receive the passionate embrace of the fans.
During his professional career with Boca Juniors, Maradona played 71 matches, scored 35 goals, finished as top scorer in five different tournaments, and won the 1981 Metropolitano Tournament. The official club account honored him on social media with the message that he permanently secured a place in the hearts of the people.
In separate news regarding Argentine football infrastructure, the Argentine Football Association announced that the Estadio Único Tricampeones del Mundo - Diego A. Maradona in La Plata will officially reopen on Sunday, November 29. The reinauguration event will feature a match between the Argentine women's national team and Germany.
The reopening takes place just a day after the Copa Conmebol Libertadores final between Estudiantes and Palmeiras in Montevideo. Argentina women's national team coach Germán Portanova stated in an AFA release that it will be very special to participate in reopening the stadium in the Buenos Aires province.
The reopening follows a cooperative agreement between the AFA and the provincial government for the use and exploitation of the venue. As part of the agreement involving infrastructure investments, the stadium recently underwent significant renovations.
La Plata Mayor Julio Alak detailed the extensive upgrades carried out by the AFA, which included replacing the pavement and soil, planting top-tier turf, installing comprehensive new seating for spectators and private boxes, and implementing advanced LED lighting. Furthermore, an AFA official suggested during a recent tour that the venue could potentially serve as a host site for the 2030 World Cup.
