Binance Suffers Record $6.3 Billion Crypto Theft in North Korea-Linked Hack
The cryptocurrency exchange pledged to cover all user losses after hot wallets were drained across ten blockchains in what may be the largest heist in history.
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has fallen victim to a massive digital heist estimated at approximately $6.3 billion. The breach, which began on October 29, unfolded across ten blockchains as attackers rapidly drained hot wallets in roughly twenty minutes. Blockchain intelligence firms and security experts have attributed the sophisticated assault with high confidence to TraderTraitor, an elite state-linked hacking unit from North Korea.
According to initial findings from Binance, the breach did not involve leaked private keys. Instead, investigators believe the hackers infiltrated a company engineer's laptop, discovering additional points of entry that allowed them to compromise internal systems and force Binance networks to sign unauthorized transactions. Over $2.5 billion was siphoned in a single transaction alone.
The staggering scale of the theft has drawn comparisons to previous high-profile incidents, eclipsing the $1.5 billion Bybit exchange hack from the previous year. Experts suggest the Binance theft could rank as the single largest known theft of any kind in history. Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic noted that the scale far exceeds traditional financial crimes, such as the $1 billion taken from the Central Bank of Iraq in 2003.
In response to the emergency, Binance worked alongside blockchain partners and token issuers to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets. Major stablecoin issuers took swift action, with Tether freezing more than $1.56 billion in USDT and Circle freezing over $800 million in USDC. Additional freezable tokens, including Ripple USD and Tether Gold, were also restricted via smart contract controls to prevent further illicit movement.
Despite the massive scale of the stolen funds, Binance assured users that customer deposits remained safe and that the platform would fully cover all losses utilizing its Secure Asset Fund for Users and company reserves. While deposits were unaffected, withdrawals were temporarily suspended as the exchange investigated the breach and worked to restore normal operations.
The fallout from the hack sent immediate shockwaves through global cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin dipped toward $76,400, while Ethereum and major altcoins experienced sharp declines. Forced liquidations in derivatives markets exceeded $1.5 billion within a 24-hour window as leveraged positions were automatically unwound. Furthermore, approximately 233.46 million XRP stolen in the attack remains parked in an address controlled by the hacker, leaving traders on high alert for potential market pressure if the funds are moved.
