FC Bayern Munich secured a 3-1 victory against SC Freiburg on Sunday, capping off a tumultuous week marked by the sudden hospitalization of head coach Vincent Kompany. Operating under assistant manager Aaron Danks at the sideline, the squad leaned on its depth and unity to overcome both physical and mental hurdles in the Bundesliga showdown.

Kompany collapsed on Friday while watching a reserve team training session at the club's facility. The 40-year-old manager had been battling a viral infection in the preceding days that forced him to miss training sessions and left him feeling weak during a mid-week UEFA Champions League match against Arsenal. Following his collapse, he was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Munich, where he remained under medical care for further testing.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl provided an update on Kompany's condition, stating that his status is stable and that he no longer suffers from headaches. Eberl emphasized that the club's primary focus is the manager's health rather than soccer. "It shows again how health is the most important thing in life — not football," Eberl remarked. The club intends to give Kompany all the time he needs to recover fully before returning to the touchline.

Despite missing Kompany and a slew of key players—including Manuel Neuer, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Luis Díaz due to injuries, alongside Joshua Kimmich due to a family bereavement—Bayern managed a resilient performance. Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring with an unexpected solo run in the 16th minute, before Serge Gnabry doubled the lead just before halftime. Although an own goal by Tom Bischof brought Freiburg back into contention late in the game, Michael Olise sealed the 3-1 victory in stoppage time.

Goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, filling in for the injured Manuel Neuer, reflected on the emotional weight of the match. "For every single individual, it was clear that this game marked the end of a very, very difficult week, both physically and mentally," Urbig said. He also made a crucial save late in the match to preserve the lead before Michael Olise's insurance goal.

Even from his hospital bed, Kompany maintained communication with the coaching staff, sending a congratulatory text message to Aaron Danks after the final whistle. Danks responded by telling the head coach to get some rest. Max Eberl noted that while no final diagnosis has been publicly established, victories like this serve as great medicine for the team and their recovering manager.

With the three points secured in Freiburg, Bayern Munich reclaimed first place in the Bundesliga standings on goal difference ahead of Borussia Dortmund. The team now turns its attention to an upcoming domestic cup fixture against FC Magdeburg before preparing for a crucial stretch of matches.
