The Bundesliga side aims to maintain its perfect European record while Marseille seeks to reverse a difficult start in the competition.

Bayer Leverkusen prepares to face Olympique de Marseille at the BayArena this Thursday in a pivotal UEFA Europa League fixture. Leverkusen enters the match with a strong European campaign, having secured victories in all three of their opening league phase games with a combined score of 8-0. In contrast, Marseille has struggled significantly in the tournament, losing all three of their initial matches and currently sitting in the lower half of the 36-team standings.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Carles Martínez Novell has emphasized the need for a collective defensive effort as his team looks to address recent struggles. While the German side has been prolific in the Europa League, they have conceded nine goals in their last three Bundesliga outings. Martínez noted that defensive responsibility is shared across the entire squad, stating, "That's partly due to the defence, but you have to look at football as a whole; everyone plays together."

Marseille arrives in Germany under the leadership of coach Bruno Génésio, who has overseen a recent resurgence in domestic play. Despite a challenging start to their Ligue 1 season, the French club has won their last four domestic matches. However, they have faced a difficult run in major European competitions, losing their last five matches. Marseille will look to captain Timothy Weah to lead the side as they attempt to secure their first points of the European campaign.

The match marks a significant test for both clubs, as Leverkusen looks to solidify their standing near the top of the table. Leverkusen has been highly efficient in the final third throughout the competition, recording the highest number of shots and the joint-highest number of shots on target among all teams. Forward Patrik Schick has been a key contributor to this success, entering the match on a strong scoring run across all competitions.

Personnel updates indicate that Leverkusen will be without Guéla Doué, Eliesse Ben Seghir, and Martin Terrier due to injuries. Additionally, Victor Boniface was not included in the club's Europa League squad. Defender Facundo Medina, who is set to face his former club, acknowledged the challenge ahead, describing Marseille as a well-organized team with experienced players. Medina emphasized that maintaining the right mentality will be crucial for Leverkusen to secure the victory.

Historically, Marseille has found it difficult against German opposition in major European tournaments, losing 10 of their last 12 such encounters. Leverkusen, meanwhile, remains unbeaten in their last 10 home Europa League matches. As the teams take the pitch, the outcome will be significant for both sides: Leverkusen aims to continue their perfect run, while Marseille hopes to turn their European fortunes around at the midpoint of the league phase.
