Auston Matthews Defends Sergei Bobrovsky After Maple Leafs Loss
The Toronto captain stood behind his goaltender following a narrow defeat to the Seattle Kraken.
The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a disappointing 5-4 defeat against the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena on Wednesday evening. Despite mounting a late comeback in regulation, Toronto ultimately walked away with zero points in the standings after a late defensive breakdown.
Trailing 4-2 late in the third period, the Maple Leafs battled back to tie the game. Rookie Gavin McKenna played a stellar role, netting two power-play goals and assisting on the game-tying tally. With just 1:30 remaining on the clock, Auston Matthews converted a pass from Darren Raddysh while Toronto utilized an extra attacker to knot the score at 4-4.
However, the momentum was short-lived. With under a minute left in regulation, defenseman Brandon Montour fired a slap shot past Sergei Bobrovsky from the right circle, securing the game-winning goal for Seattle and dropping Toronto's record to 7-6-2.
Following the hard-fought loss, team captain Auston Matthews quickly deflected blame away from his goaltender, emphasizing that the team bore responsibility for the defensive lapses that led to Seattle's scoring opportunities.
"Bob's been great for us all year long," Matthews stated to NHL media after the game. "Every now and then, there are a couple you want back, but I put it more on us as a five-man unit for not doing enough to help him out in situations where they're getting great chances."
Matthews specifically pointed to the decisive play as a structural breakdown that left Bobrovsky exposed to a strong shot from the outside lane. Despite the frustration of losing a point in the final minute, the captain stressed the importance of turning the page quickly as the team concludes its current road trip.
"It definitely stings, but I think there's nothing we can do now," Matthews added. "We've got to play one more game here on this road trip and do our best to come out of there with two points."
In the wake of the defeat, the Maple Leafs organization announced roster adjustments for their upcoming contest. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz has been confirmed to start in net, while Bobrovsky will serve as the backup.
