Antonelli Dominates US Grand Prix to Close in on Formula 1 Title
Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his ninth victory of the season at the Circuit of the Americas, leaving him on the verge of becoming Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion.
Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli delivered a dominant performance at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, winning the 18th round of the Formula 1 season from pole position at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. The 20-year-old Italian executed a flawless single-stop strategy across the 56-lap race to finish well ahead of his competitors.
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc claimed second place late in the race after passing Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Verstappen struggled with severe tire degradation and vehicle handling issues throughout the afternoon, eventually crossing the finish line 17.485 seconds behind the race leader.
Reflecting on his victory, Antonelli stated, "This was the result we needed. The whole team truly deserved it because we work very hard. The execution was perfect and the one-stop strategy was the right one. We are very close and we will try to finish on a good note and secure it quickly."
The technical battle during the race was largely defined by performance in the high-speed Sector 1. While Antonelli maintained impressive momentum and stability utilizing Mercedes' upgraded aerodynamic package, Verstappen wrestled with rear-end slides and balance compromises as Red Bull attempted to adjust their mechanical setup for Austin's bumpy layout.
With this victory, Antonelli extended his championship lead to 123 points. He now needs to score only two points at the upcoming race in Mexico City next weekend to clinch his first world championship title.
Behind the podium finishers, Lewis Hamilton took fourth place for Ferrari, followed by McLaren's Lando Norris in fifth after fading in the closing laps due to tire wear. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar finished sixth after experiencing a poor start and engine troubles, while Oscar Piastri of McLaren placed seventh ahead of Mercedes' George Russell.
Rounding out the top ten points scorers, Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls finished eighth, Pierre Gasly secured ninth for Alpine after ending a four-race scoring drought, and Esteban Ocon of Haas placed 14th following a strong early start from the back of the grid.
