Alvin Tedjo Wins Mayoral Race in Mississauga
First-term councillor Alvin Tedjo secures a decisive victory in the Mississauga mayoral election.
Rookie councillor Alvin Tedjo achieved a surprising and decisive victory in the Mississauga mayoral race, defeating incumbent mayor Carolyn Parrish and former mayor Bonnie Crombie. With nearly all polls reporting, Tedjo secured a lead of more than 20,000 votes over Parrish and over 30,000 votes over Crombie.
“The polls really underestimated us, but we really smacked them,” said elated Tedjo supporter Jan Durkiewicz on election night. Tedjo, 43, noted that his win demonstrates a strong public desire for change. He is the first mayor since 1978 who is not, or has not served under, the late Hazel McCallion.
“People in this city are choosing change… and we’re going to deliver that,” Tedjo told reporters, emphasizing the need to begin work immediately. In his new role leading the council, Tedjo will be tasked with fulfilling his campaign pledge to freeze the city portion of property taxes for the next two years.
Tedjo's meteoric rise during the campaign caught many observers by surprise. After initially lagging in the polls behind more established figures, his campaign gained momentum through targeted endorsements, active social media engagement, and a focus on community safety and affordability.
The mayoral race was heavily shaped by fierce political rivalry and a widely discussed debate between Parrish and Crombie. Exchanges during the debates became viral memes online, which ultimately alienated some voters and directed attention toward alternative candidates like Tedjo.
Candidates also clashed over major infrastructure proposals during the campaign. While Crombie proposed a subway extension and Parrish pitched a major downtown transformation, Tedjo focused on practical, cost-effective solutions and pledged to prioritize local affordability and property tax relief.
The shadow of Hazel McCallion also loomed over the contest, with both sides invoking her legacy. However, voters ultimately opted for a fresh face, setting the stage for a new political era in Mississauga under Tedjo's leadership.
