Alstom Shares Plunge Following Guidance Cut and Cash Flow Warning
French rail manufacturer Alstom saw its stock drop significantly on the Paris Stock Exchange after slashing its full-year outlook.
Shares in French rail systems manufacturer Alstom plummeted between 25% and 30% on the Paris Stock Exchange on Monday, November 2, 2026, following a severe reduction to the company's full-year financial outlook. The stock dropped sharply to approximately €11.50 from its previous Friday close of €15.81, intensifying an ongoing downward trend that has seen shares lose more than half their value over the course of the year.
The downward revision was driven by significant operational hurdles, technical issues, and testing requirements tied to the Coradia Max platform, alongside project execution challenges primarily stemming from Germany. In a statement released by the company, management explained that strengthened reviews of critical rolling stock projects provided clearer visibility into execution risks, forcing a reassessment of margins at completion across several contracts.
As a result of these complications, Alstom adjusted its full-year guidance downward across multiple key metrics. The adjusted EBIT margin guidance was slashed to roughly 1% from an earlier forecast of approximately 6.5%. Furthermore, the company abandoned its positive outlook for free cash flow, now anticipating a deficit of €1.5 billion for the fiscal year, a figure that analysts at financial institutions like Citi noted represents a substantial portion of the company's overall market capitalization.
Production targets and organic sales growth expectations were also scaled back. Alstom lowered its forecasted rail car production to approximately 4,000 units, down from an initial target of 4,400 to 4,500 cars. Organic sales growth guidance was likewise revised downward to low- to mid-single digits from a previous projection of about 5%. To address its financial standing, the firm outlined a debt-reduction target of approximately €2 billion, though market analysts expressed concern regarding the lack of specific details surrounding the de-leveraging plan.
Despite the gloomy full-year outlook, Alstom reported an increase in preliminary figures for the first half of the fiscal year. Revenue rose 3% to €9.3 billion compared to the same period last year, while overall orders reached €11.0 billion, bolstered by commercial momentum in the second quarter that accounted for €8.4 billion of the total. However, the first-half profitability metrics reflected the underlying operational strains, with the adjusted EBIT margin falling to around 4% and free cash flow registering a deficit of approximately €1.25 billion.
The operational setbacks have forced concrete adjustments to the company's manufacturing timeline, including a temporary pause on Coradia Max development work to allow for additional testing and homologation processes. Alstom is scheduled to release its complete financial results for the first half of the 2026-27 fiscal year on November 17, followed by its third-quarter results on January 19, 2027.
