Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, Former Mayor of Seville, Dies at 69
The socialist politician governed the Andalusian capital for three terms and drove major urban transformations.
Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, who served as the mayor of Seville for three consecutive terms from 1999 to 2011, passed away at the age of 69 after a long illness. His death followed complications from a severe stroke he suffered in 2023, which had kept him away from public life during his final years.
The City Council of Seville declared two days of official mourning starting at noon, with municipal flags lowered to half-staff at the City Hall and other public buildings. The news was announced during an extraordinary session of the municipal plenary, where representatives observed a moment of silence in his honor.
Born in La Rinconada on September 25, 1957, Sánchez Monteseirín earned a degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Seville before pursuing an extensive political career with the Spanish Socialist Workers Party. Prior to leading the Seville City Council, he served as a local councilor in Burguillos and headed the Provincial Council of Seville from 1995 to 1999.
During his twelve years leading the Andalusian capital, the politician championed several major urban development projects that reshaped the city landscape. His administration oversaw the construction of the Metropol Parasol, commonly known as the Setas de la Encarnación, the expansion of the bicycle lane network, the introduction of the Metrocentro tram, and the pedestrianization of historic areas such as Constitution Avenue.
Reactions from across the political spectrum poured in following his passing. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez praised him on social media as "a dedicated municipalist who transformed Seville into a city for everyone, open to the future, more sustainable, and more competitive." Andalusian regional president Juanma Moreno also offered condolences, highlighting his courageous and transformative measures.
Local leaders and former colleagues remembered his dedication to public service and neighborhood development. Current Seville Mayor José Luis Sanz, alongside former mayors Juan Espadas and Antonio Muñoz, noted that many of the city's modern transformations carry his lasting footprint, despite the resistance and controversies some of his ambitious projects initially faced.
Honoring the family's wishes, no public lying-in-state was held at the City Hall. Instead, relatives opted for an intimate private wake at the SE-30 funeral home, followed by funeral services scheduled for Tuesday.
