Aldosivi Relegated Following Loss to River Plate
The Mar del Plata club will drop to the second tier of Argentine football after finishing near the bottom of their group in the Torneo Clausura.
Aldosivi has officially been relegated to the second division of Argentine football following a 2-0 defeat against River Plate. The match, held at the José María Minella Stadium in Mar del Plata, marked the sixteenth and final round of the regular phase of the 2026 Torneo Clausura.
The contest remained scoreless for the majority of the match, with River Plate struggling to break through the Aldosivi defense. The deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute when forward Lucas Beltrán successfully converted a penalty kick. Ángel Correa later secured the victory for the visitors by scoring in the final minute of stoppage time.
Under the leadership of manager Javier Sanguinetti, Aldosivi concluded the season in the penultimate position of their group with only 11 points. This poor performance throughout the campaign ultimately resulted in the club's departure from the top flight of the Argentine league system.
For River Plate, the victory was a significant recovery following a previous loss to Boca Juniors. The team, managed by Leonardo Ponzio, finished the regular phase in fourth place within Zone B, accumulating 26 points. They now look ahead to the round of 16, where they are set to face the fifth-place finisher from Zone A.
Potential opponents for River Plate in the upcoming playoff stage include Vélez, Defensa y Justicia, Lanús, or Newell's. The club expects to host this knockout match at home, provided their fourth-place standing is confirmed by the final results of other league fixtures.
Elsewhere in the league, Rosario Central is preparing for its own critical final match against Estudiantes de Río Cuarto without star player Ángel Di María. The forward is sidelined due to a recurring pubalgia injury that flared up during a recent match against Sarmiento. Di María noted that he was suffering from significant pain in his left pubis, leading the coaching staff to prioritize his recovery for the upcoming playoffs.
Rosario Central, currently managed by Jorge Almirón, remains in contention for the league title. To secure a second consecutive championship, the team requires a victory in their final match combined with specific results from Boca Juniors and Argentinos Juniors. Conversely, their opponent, Estudiantes de Río Cuarto, has already been relegated, adding further stakes to the final day of the regular season.
