Airbnb New Policy Restricts Checkout Chores and Surprise Rules
The vacation rental platform is cracking down on excessive cleaning tasks requested of travelers while drawing pushback from some property owners.
Airbnb has announced a major policy update that puts an end to some of the most frustrating checkout chores required of guests, addressing a long-standing complaint among travelers who pay cleaning fees only to face extensive housework before departure. Under the new guidelines, hosts generally cannot require guests to complete time-consuming tasks like stripping beds, doing laundry, washing and putting away dishes, or hauling trash off-site. The rules apply to reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026.
While travelers have widely celebrated the change on social media platforms like TikTok and Reddit, the announcement has drawn a mixed reaction from property hosts. Many travelers shared past grievances involving demands to clean entire properties, wash bedsheets, and take garbage to distant disposal sites despite paying separate cleaning fees. Conversely, some hosts argue that basic cleanup tasks are necessary due to tight turnaround times between bookings and help keep overall cleaning costs lower for consumers.
The updated policy does not eliminate cleaning fees entirely, but it establishes clearer boundaries regarding what tasks guests can reasonably be asked to perform. Hosts are still permitted to ask guests to leave used dishes in the sink, gather used towels together, and separate garbage and recycling into designated indoor bins. Furthermore, hosts can request that guests turn off air conditioning or other amenities when leaving the property.
In addition to limiting chores, Airbnb is addressing the issue of surprise instructions delivered after a reservation is confirmed. All house rules and cleaning requests must now be clearly disclosed in the designated section of a listing at the time of booking. Hosts are prohibited from introducing new requirements later through direct messages, posted signs inside the property, or in-person instructions upon arrival.
Airbnb has outlined specific enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with the new standards. The platform will flag violating requests and provide guidance to hosts, with potential penalties for repeated infractions including warnings, alerts displayed on listings, and reduced visibility in search results. However, the company noted that exceptions may be made based on specific local conditions, such as requiring animal-proof trash containers in bear country or limiting shower usage in regions experiencing severe drought.
The ongoing debate over checkout expectations highlights broader discussions regarding the value proposition of vacation rentals compared to traditional hotels. Although some disgruntled customers have publicly stated they prefer returning to hotels to avoid unexpected chores and high fees, Airbnb continues to report strong financial performance, demonstrating that platform bookings remain resilient despite the friction between hosts and guests.
