Adif President Resigns Amid Railway Safety Crisis
Luis Pedro Marco de la Peña stepped down following the departure of Transportation Minister Óscar Puente in the wake of a fatal train crash.
The president of Adif, Luis Pedro Marco de la Peña, resigned from his position following a meeting with the newly appointed Minister of Transportation and First Vice President, Carlos Cuerpo. His departure comes just 24 hours after Transportation Minister Óscar Puente stepped down, marking a major leadership shakeup within Spain's railway infrastructure sector following a severe safety crisis.
The high-profile resignations follow the devastating train accident in Urda, Toledo, which resulted in 69 deaths and left over one hundred travelers injured. Marco de la Peña had led the railway company for about two years, taking the role to help restore the organization's public image after the Koldo case, but ultimately faced immense scrutiny as the disaster unfolded.
During an interview, Carlos Cuerpo described the resignation as an appropriate decision, noting that Marco de la Peña stepped down for reasons similar to those presented by Puente. Cuerpo confirmed that the outgoing executive submitted his resignation voluntarily during a meeting between the two officials.
The twin departures address different tiers of accountability within the government and infrastructure administration. While Puente's exit responds to political responsibility, Marco de la Peña's departure deals directly with the management of the railway network.
In the wake of the leadership changes, Cuerpo emphasized the priority of restoring public trust in the high-speed rail network. He highlighted recent operational and technological steps approved by the Council of Ministers, alongside protocol improvements and increased funding aimed at ensuring proper maintenance investments.
The new transportation chief also announced plans to meet with labor unions regarding planned strikes in the rail sector to minimize disruptions for commuters. Meanwhile, the political fallout continues to resonate as the ruling party adjusts its strategy ahead of upcoming general elections scheduled for November 29.
