Aday Mara Makes Impact in NBA Debut as Thunder Defeat Spurs
The rookie center logged 12 minutes off the bench to help Oklahoma City secure a 116-104 victory on Tuesday night.
Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Aday Mara made his highly anticipated regular-season debut on Tuesday night, providing a critical spark in a 116-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs at the Frost Bank Center. Playing in a rematch of last season's Western Conference Finals, the 7-foot-3 center logged 12 minutes off the bench and immediately earned praise from his head coach for a performance that outweighed his limited playing time.
Despite turning his ankle late in the first quarter, Mara quickly returned to the floor after a brief break in play. He finished the contest with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field, two rebounds, one assist, and one block. According to Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault, the young big man delivered one of the most vital stretches of the game and did not appear fazed by the competitive atmosphere.
"It was a great impact. He had probably one of the stretches of the game that was critical," Daigneault said. "He didn't seem overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the game." Daigneault added that the outing was a continuation of the strong play Mara displayed throughout the preseason, where the rookie proved his ability to alter games despite not seeing heavy minutes.
Selected 12th overall in the 2026 NBA Draft, Mara entered the league following a standout junior season at Michigan, where he helped lead the Wolverines to their first NCAA national championship since 1989. During his final collegiate campaign, the Spanish center averaged 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game, earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors. His collegiate credentials also established him as a premier rim protector, highlighted by massive measurements at the NBA Draft Combine, including a 9-foot-9 standing reach and a 7-foot-6 wingspan.
Tuesday's matchup provided several notable moments for the rookie, who was the only first-year player to log significant non-garbage time minutes on opening night. After occasionally struggling with defensive drop coverage early on, Mara delivered a pair of crucial sequences late in the third quarter. He blocked a lob attempt by Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, sprinted down the court, and finished an alley-oop dunk to extend Oklahoma City's lead to 14 points.
While analysts project that Mara may see modest minute totals initially given Oklahoma City's established depth at the center position, his opening-night production demonstrated his potential to contribute to a team with championship aspirations. The rookie's transition to the NBA has also brought minor off-court friction, as his former Spanish club, Basket Zaragoza, claims he remains under contract and has threatened legal action, though the Thunder maintained that no club clearance was required for him to play.
With the opening victory secured, the Thunder will look to maintain their undefeated record when they face the Denver Nuggets. Daigneault signaled that Mara has earned a higher level of trust moving forward, noting, "I'm only going to trust him more after seeing how he performed in such a high-level game."
