Actress Naomi Ackie Discusses Dealing with Online Trolls and Body Negativity

British actress Naomi Ackie recently opened up about facing harsh online criticism, revealing that internet trolls frequently send her vile comments and direct messages regarding her teeth. Speaking during an appearance on Josh Smith's Great Chat Show podcast, the actress explained that the negativity becomes so overwhelming that she removes social media applications from her phone as soon as she finishes promoting a project.

Ackie, who is currently starring in the body horror film Clayface, noted that she has received hateful messages, including people telling her they hate her, using racial slurs, and calling her derogatory names. She also pointed out that critics often target her natural dental appearance, writing that she needs to fix her teeth.

Expressing bewilderment at the behavior of internet trolls, Ackie questioned the mindset of individuals who believe their opinions should impact a stranger's life. "You feel like somehow your opinion matters enough that it should affect the person you're sending it to. That's a weird power trip you think you have," she stated during the interview.

The 35-year-old actress admitted that it took her a significant amount of time to accept her distinctive teeth, but she has grown to love them. Emphasizing that she feels no pressure to alter her appearance, she stated that her teeth are not changing at all.

Ackie also expressed deep concern for younger people who navigate social media while still learning to live in their bodies. She wondered what kind of psychological impact exposure to such hateful content has on unstable children and teenagers who might view those remarks underneath public posts.

Alongside her reflections on online harassment, Ackie is currently celebrating the theatrical release of her latest projects. Her film Clayface, directed by James Watkins, is currently screening in U.K. cinemas, featuring her in the role of Dr. Caitlyn Corr alongside co-star Tom Rhys Harries.
