Aaron Wiggins Makes Strong Debut for Atlanta Hawks in Season Opener
The former Oklahoma City Thunder guard played nearly 32 minutes off the bench in Atlanta's 132-125 win over the Orlando Magic.
Aaron Wiggins made an immediate impact in his first regular-season game for the Atlanta Hawks, playing 31 minutes and 45 seconds off the bench during a 132-125 victory against the Orlando Magic at the Kia Center. Only teammate Dyson Daniels logged more playing time for Atlanta in the hard-fought season opener.
Wiggins contributed 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, which included converting 3 of his 5 attempts from beyond the arc. He also successfully made all three of his free throws while adding three rebounds, two steals, and four personal fouls in a game heavily affected by whistles, as the Hawks were collectively whistled for 30 fouls.
Atlanta head coach Quin Snyder explained that foul trouble dictated some of Wiggins' minutes, but matchup dynamics and game flow were equally influential. Once the Hawks transitioned to more switching on pick-and-roll plays and executed double-team situations, Snyder noted that having Wiggins on the floor provided necessary size and defensive versatility.
"We had, like, half our team with four or five fouls, so it's a good thing there were some other guys that were willing to take shots," Snyder said. "I think that's got to be, depth and versatility is something that our guys need to embrace. I think they have."
The trust placed in Wiggins by the coaching staff stems from an active offseason when the Hawks acquired him from the Oklahoma City Thunder on June 21 in exchange for two second-round draft picks. Atlanta absorbed his salary into a trade exception, utilizing funds from sending Luke Kennard to the Los Angeles Lakers in February. Wiggins is currently in the middle of a five-year, $45 million contract signed in 2024, earning $9.2 million for the season.
During his tenure with the Thunder after being drafted 55th overall out of Maryland in 2021, Wiggins built a reputation for solid play over 339 games, averaging 8.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 38 percent from 3-point range. He was also a member of Oklahoma City's 2025 championship team before heading to Atlanta alongside former teammate Luguentz Dort.
Wiggins' regular-season performance followed an encouraging 19-point showing in the preseason finale against the Dallas Mavericks, where he also hit four 3-pointers. His production in the opener reinforced expectations that his role with the Hawks will extend well beyond a traditional reserve position as the team prepares to face the Charlotte Hornets.
